What if everything around you was designed by a computer and you lived in a virtual world without even realizing it. Are you willing to take the blue pill and remain ignorant or are you brave enough to take the red pill and unveil the truth?
Set inside the matrix, the slot’s background consists of mystical symbols representing the matrix’s code. The green color dominates the whole dashboard as even the reels’ thin black border is emitting a light green light. The logo is found at the top of the screen while at the bottom you’ll find the controls.
Mechanics-wise, The Matrix features the classic reel spin format meaning that all the reels start spinning together but they stop one at a time in consecutive order. The game has a truly unique design and didn’t remind us of anything else we’ve seen or played.

How to Play The Matrix
The game features 4 lines and 5 reels as well as a very big number of 50 fixed paylines. Regarding the controls, from left to right you’ll find the info section, lines indicator, line bet selection, last win and total bet amount, autoplay function, and finally, the spin button.
Like Playtech’s other slots, this one only has 4 preset autoplay options for 10, 25, 50, and 99 spins but doesn’t offer more parameters or a quickspin feature.
The bet limits start at a minimum of $0.5 (or 1p per line) going up to $100 (or $2 per line).
The Matrix is a low to medium volatility slot with a maximum payout of 500x your total bet so theoretically you can win up to $50,000.
The game is equipped with 6 low-paying symbols four of which are represented by mystical symbols. The other two come in the form of a rotary telephone and a pair of sunglasses. You’ll also find 3 high-paying symbols portrayed as characters from the Matrix movies.
These are Trinity, Morpheus, and Agent Smith. Moving on to special symbols, there are:
- Wild – The base game’s main wild symbol is a holograph of Neo’s face. It substitutes all other symbols except for the scatter to form winning combinations.
- Black cat – It acts as the game’s second wild symbol. It also substitutes for all other symbols except for the scatter to form winning combinations. If it appears stacked on reel 5 it is duplicated on reel 1 and activates the “Déjà vu Shuffle” feature.
- Scatter – The slot’s scatter is the red and blue pill symbol. It appears on reels 1, 3, and 5. It triggers the free games feature.
- Nebuchadnezzar free game mode symbols – A couple more symbols can appear during this mode. These are the Sentinel Wild which works as a regular wild and the EMP machine which removes Sentinel Wilds from the reels.

The game comes with some intuitive bonus modes which are both visually pleasing and potentially very generous. Let’s take a look at them:
A glitch in the matrix happens when something is changed which sometimes results in the same thing or scene occurring twice. This is what happens here. When the black cat wild symbol appears stacked on the fifth reel, it will duplicate on the first reel as well.
Following the duplication, all remaining symbols will be shuffled for a chance to form new winning combinations with the 8 black cat wild symbols.
When the scatter symbols land on reels 1, 3, and 5 you will be presented with two free game options:
- Agent Smith 8 Free Games
As the name suggests, you will get 8 free spins. During those, extra Agent Smith symbols will appear in the reels to increase your chances of getting a big win. The feature can’t be retriggered.
- Nebuchadnezzar Unlimited Free Games
During this mode, all Sentinel Wilds will lock in place after landing. If you have 6 or more of them at the reels at the same time then the mode will be terminated.
However, if you get the EMP machine symbol all Sentinel Wilds will be removed. In theory, this mode can run indefinitely which is why the feature is presented as an “Unlimited Free Games” bonus.
