After a quick trailer presenting the game’s special features, players are welcomed to the snowy mountains where the slot’s story takes place. The reels are located in the lower middle part of the screen and as the game goes on you’ll soon realize that they are located right below a train bridge.
Mechanics are fairly different from classic slots as Black River Gold features tumbling reels, symbol transformation, sticky wilds, and much more. With every spin, the reels appear building up from left to right in consecutive order.

How to Play Black River Gold
The game starts with 4 rows and 6 reels with 4,096 ways to win. However, this can change during the game as the board can expand up to 8 rows and 6 reels with a total of 262,144 ways to win.
Players can select bet size, spin, or enable the autoplay function by clicking on the respective buttons located at the screen’s corner. One of the buttons provides access to the in-game menu for even further customization.
Clicking on the bet selector gives you access to four preset betting strategies you can use. If activated, each of them will automatically adjust your bet based on your bankroll level and the results from the last few spins.
Bets start at a minimum of $0.20 and can go up to $100.
Black River Gold is a very high volatility slot with a hit frequency of 24.1%. That said, the maximum exposure is 5,000x the bet size which means players can win up to $500,000!
The game consists of 4 low, 4 medium, and 4 high paying symbols. The least rewarding of them are represented by card values J-A. Following are silver circular and star badges, a glass of whiskey, and a revolver. The most rewarding symbols come in the form of an emerald, a gold nugget, a diamond, and the game’s protagonist, Kane.
The slot’s special symbols are:
- Wild – The slot’s wild symbol is a red rose. It substitutes for all symbols except for the bonus and compass symbols.
- Compass – If symbols located across the compass match then they become wilds. If the compass symbol reaches the bottom row it becomes a wild symbol.
- Bonus – The slot’s bonus symbol is a locked safe. Getting at least 3 bonus symbols will trigger the avalanche free drops bonus game.

Hold on to your seats because this is going to be a crazy train ride. Let’s check out the abundance of extra features Elk Studios has equipped this game with.
All symbols that are part of a win explode and the open space is filled by dropping symbols. Adding to this, another extra row of symbols is unlocked every time this happens up to a maximum of 8 rows. This process continues until there are no winning symbols left. The board returns to its normal state for the next spin.
Big symbols can absorb smaller symbols located below them. If the revolver absorbs a wild or enough symbols to fill all 6 bullet holes then it becomes wild.
During the game, the symbols that drop in place can be super, mega, or epic meaning they occupy a 2×2, 3×3, or even a 4×4 space respectively.
Based on how many bonus symbols you get, you will be awarded:
- 3 symbols – 10 drops
- 4 symbols – 15 drops
- 5 symbols – 20 drops
- 6 symbols – 25 drops
The free drops can be retriggered during the feature and the number of extra drops that are awarded is determined in the same way as the initial triggering of the bonus feature mentioned before.
Also, during the feature, all wild compass symbols are collected at the bottom row and become wild when the free drop ends. If a wild compass is located above a wild symbol then it remains a wild compass symbol for the next free drop as well.
The bonus game starts with the safety level set at 4 rows. After a winning free drop, the safety level is increased by one row and the next free drop starts from that new safety level.
The maximum safety level can be 8 rows and it can’t move down during an ongoing bonus game. The feature ends when the player doesn’t have any remaining free drops or has reached the maximum win.
