The Indonesian rupiah is one of the least used currencies in the online gambling world, despite being used by a population of over 270 million. Why? The primary reason is that all forms of online gambling (well, gambling in general) are illegal in Indonesia. The predominantly Muslim population (over 86%) are forbidden from betting in the country under Sharia law. Even lottery games are not permitted.
Given that most of the country’s potential market is forbidden from betting, and the country cracks down hard on those who engage in gambling – does the Indonesian rupiah even play a part in the online casino world? Oddly enough, yes. Despite it officially being the fourth weakest circulating currency globally, it is somewhat accessible for players based in Asia (if not Indonesia). Therefore, it is commonly accepted at IDR online casinos based offshore and internationally.
Hundreds of millions of people use the Indonesian rupiah. Still, given that Indonesia has a blanket ban on all forms of gambling, only players based outside of the country use it for gambling purposes. Aside from Indonesia itself, only Timor-Leste has adopted the currency, and the latter has only done so in an unofficial capacity.
However, if you are based in neighbouring countries (and Indonesia has many), and your currency is not one of those available at internet betting sites, then nipping over to an IDR casino and using rupiah to deposit and play could be advantageous. It is for this reason that so many offshore and internationally based Asian casinos accept IDR deposits.
As touched on, the Indonesian government has a blanket ban on all forms of online gambling. Even seemingly innocent games, such as bingo and lottery, alongside confirmed games of skill, like poker, are banned. Ordinarily, this would not put off some players, and they would boot up a VPN to bet elsewhere. However, the consequences are severe in Indonesia.
The country has some of the strictest Sharia laws in place for those who break the anti-gambling rules. Moreover, the Indonesians are not afraid to crack down on gamblers. They regularly raid facilities (online and land-based) where gambling takes place. Indonesia also goes out of its way to block virtually all foreign and international casinos, commanding ISPs to do so. This is not likely to change in the future.
Of course, Indonesia demands that all its banks prohibit transactions for gambling purposes. This makes those options a no-go for Indonesians. If you are based in the country and want to deposit with IDR at online casinos, then you are going to find yourself short of options. Using another currency is advised.
Players based outside of the country who want to use Indonesian rupiah to bet can use various payment providers, depending on the country they reside in. Payment providers known to accept IDR in some capacity include:
As mentioned, we strongly urge Indonesians not to process IDR bank transfers to online gambling sites using their banks (such as Bank Central Asia), as it is likely that these are monitored and will almost certainly be blocked.
