Cowboys and aliens sure sound like a weird concept but somehow it worked as a movie and was successful enough to be made into a slot. Pick your poison. Will you choose a revolver or a laser rifle shooting out plasma instead of bullets?
The slot features a Wild West theme playing in the background where we can also make out parts of a ruined saloon. The logo of the game is located at the top while at the bottom you’ll find the controls. You may also notice the vibrant green used in some fonts which represents the alien side of the slot.
Mechanics-wise, Playtech decided to choose the classic format meaning that all the reels start spinning altogether and then stop one by one. If you like this game you’ll probably want to check out Cowboys Gold, a Wild West-themed title by Pragmatic.

How to Play Cowboys & Aliens
The game features 3 lines and 5 reels as well as 9 fixed paylines. Regarding the controls, from left to right, you’ll find the info section, paylines and bet per line indicators, last win and total bet amount followed by the autoplay function, and last, the spin button. A quickspin option and custom autoplay parameters are both missing as you only get 4 preset options for 10, 25, 50, and 99 spins.
Some other options can be tweaked via the in-game menu but these mostly have to do with the sounds and animations rather than the actual gameplay.
The bet limits start at $0.09 (or 1p per line) and are capped at $45 (or $5 per line). This is a medium volatility title from Playtech which also comes with a relatively low 94.01% RTP compared to other slots of its kind.
That being said, the winning potential is nice as the maximum payout you can get is 10,000x your bet or $450,000.
The game is equipped with a total of 10 symbols. The 5 low-paying ones come in the form of card values 10-A while the high-paying ones are a pastor, an Indian warrior, a cowboy (Zeke), a female cowboy (Verity), and an alien.
As for the special symbols, there are:
- Wild – The slot’s wild appears as a burning alien spaceship. It substitutes for all symbols except for the scatter, bonus, and alien weapon.
- Scatter – The slot’s scatter symbol appears as the game’s logo. Landing 3 or more will activate the free games feature.
- Bonus – It can only appear on reels 1 and 5 and it activates the alien attack bonus.
- Alien weapon – It can transform regular symbols into wilds.

This Playtech slot comes equipped with 3 bonus features. Let’s take a close look at each one.
When the alien weapon appears on the first reel, a small triangle located on it will start spinning and randomly pick a number from 1-4. This is the number of symbols that the gun will shoot and transform into wilds.
Any symbol located on reels 2-5 can be shot excluding the wild and scatter symbols.
This feature awards 8 free games and is activated if you land 3 or more scatter symbols. At the start of each round, a 2×2 comic strip will cover a random portion of the reels. All covered positions will act as wilds.
On each subsequent round, the comic strip will be changing position. This continues until the last spin. Special symbols can appear during the free games.
This feature will be activated if the bonus symbol lands on the first and fifth reel. The player will be moved to a different screen where he has to choose one of three characters. The goal of the game is to kill all the aliens which will appear in 3 waves.
The bonus ends when the player is out of ammo or if all the aliens have been killed. You can also win additional cash prizes for killing all the aliens and for each unit of ammo that wasn’t used.
Each of the three characters is equipped with a unique weapon and a specific amount of ammo as well as a set level of accuracy. These are:
- Cowboy (Zeke) – Uses a gun with 6 bullets and has high accuracy.
- Female Cowboy (Verity) – Uses a whip with 20 shots and has low accuracy.
- Indian Warrior – Uses a bow with 12 arrows and has medium accuracy.
